When you visit a waterfall or see a great photograph of one the first thing that springs to mind is relaxation. There is definitely a sense of peace and tranquility that comes from watching water flowing and cascading down over rocks.

Couple this together with the rainforest setting surrounded by lush green foliage that most waterfalls are located in and you get the relaxing ambience that only mother mature can provide.

Sometimes it is difficult to do true justice to a magnificent waterfall in a single photograph, but with some help from the following tips and tricks you will be able to capture the essence and majesty of the entire scene without too much hassles.

1. Choose a Cloudy Day - With waterfall photos it is always best to take the photo on a cloudy or overcast day as this produces the best results.

2. Use a Tripod - Buy a strong, sturdy tripod to ensure that the camera does not shake.

3. Level the camera - Before taking any photo ensure that the tripod is level, hence you will not have to alter this later in photoshop.

4. Get a Flowing Water Effect - Take the photo with a longer exposure, such as 2-4 seconds, in order to get that special flowing water effect on the waterfall photo.

5. Frame the Photo Wisely - When choosing what to include in the photo always leave a little bit of room around the edge of the photo for cropping later.

6. Use a Remote Control - Always use a remote control when taking the photo to ensure that there is no camera shake or movement when you press the button.

7. Choose the Right Time of Day - Try to take your photos in mid morning or afternoon for waterfalls, especially if it is a heavily overcast day as this tends to give the best diffuse light.

8. Get a Good SLR Lens - Buy a really good SLR lens for your camera. It will cost you a lot but it will help you to get the best out of your camera.

9. Remove Water Reflections - To remove reflections off the waterfall use a polarizing filter on your SLR camera.

10. Use Different Exposure Levels - Cover all bases by taking 3 photos at different exposure levels, usually in 2 f/stop intervals.
